A Brief History

Miss Sharon's Daycare opened its doors in November of 1989.   Many of our children have arrived as infants and remained with us throughout elementary school (before and after school).  Ours has always been a small, intimate group where our children and families blend in such a way as to become extended family.  The children grow up knowing each other, their care providers, and the other families as our children, care providers, and families tend to remain the

same for most of the child's years spent in daily care.  Many of the children we have kept through the years have remained friends with the children they grew up with and with us as well.  We feel truly blessed to have been a part of their lives and doubly blessed to remain there.  Our experience has shown us that children truly flourish in this type of setting and continue to excel in all areas as they move forward in growth. Some things never change at the Daycare-- like the
popularity of Power Rangers!

The Daycare Today - Purpose and Goals

We provide a safe, clean, nurturing environment for our children.  The purpose of a family day home is to provide children with a home setting where they grow in a family type environment as opposed to a daycare center.  Our goal with all our children is to help them feel safe, loved, and nurtured, while teaching them the importance of sharing, caring, and listening, as well as the rewards of good behavior.

We offer a preschool curriculum called Early Start for our children aged 2 1/2 and up.  The program promotes learning colors, numbers 1-20, the alphabet, and beginning formation in writing.  It also teaches simple relational concepts (up-down, small-large, etc.) and beginning letter sounds.

Licensure

There are two licensed family day homes in Isle of Wight County; Miss Sharon's is the older of the two.  Miss Sharon's licensure is administered by the Department of Social Services of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Miss Sharon's in the Community
We also feel it is important to teach our children to be good citizens and neighbors by participating in community and church-related projects.  Many of our children and their families attend Riverview United Methodist Church or other area churches; each summer, many of the children attend Riverview UMC's Vacation Bible School.  We recently completed boxes for the Gift-a-Child program, which provides Christmas gifts for children in areas of the world where political or economic unrest prevents them from receiving gifts at Christmas time.  The project is headed by one of our alumni, Zachary Burke, 15, who has a heart to help others.  Last Christmas, we helped to provide presents and food for needy families in Isle of Wight County along with several of our former families helping to provide and deliver.
